This was a really important episode for me. Particularly when Gary said:You have to keep controlling the schedules of young kids. But there comes a time when
you have to keep letting out as the kids get older. The consequences of their choices. It's
hard not to take it personally. I think it's wrong to take it personally.
A pastor whose young adult child was breaking his heart, turned to Dallas Willard as a mentor for advice.
Dallas Willard said, "This will be a test of your joyfulness in Christ, Will you let your adult
child's decisions undercut your joy in Christ? If so you are making yourself vulnerable to a person
who stumbles in many ways."
Learning to let go. Learning not to expect...
Saying, "I sacrificed for you. I did this for you. I raised you right. I'm not getting anything back. I'm not getting
anniversary cards. I'm not getting gratitude. Did you give to your kids or did you trade with your kids?
I'm giving to you but I expect a return. That's not giving. That's trading.I took care of you. You take care of me now.
It's a universal thing with empty nest parents."
I had to SLOW the speed down to transcribe this. SO thankful for this to chew on.
Sidenote: I also heard the commercials Dave and Jon do at a slower speed. It is hilarious. Sounds like they are on a musical "high."
